PPIW at the WISERD Conference

The Institute convened a high powered panel at the WISERD conference to discuss the nature of evidence based policy in Wales.  The panel brought together perspectives from the political arena, the civil service, think tanks and academia.  Our speakers included:

–        Chris Roberts, special adviser to the Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty;

–        Michael Trickey, Joseph Rowntree Foundation Wales Adviser and Director of the Public Services Wales 2025 programme; and

–        Professor Judith Phillips, Director of RIASS at Swansea University.

With the burgeoning network of the ‘What Works Centres’, the growing number of universities establishing public policy institutes, and research councils’ increasing emphasis of the importance of ‘impact’, there has been a groundswell of interest in whether research-based evidence can and should inform public policy. The panel explored these questions, and discussed how effective Wales is at generating and using research based evidence.
