We are pleased to announce that the Public Policy Institute for Wales has been awarded funding by the Economic and Social Research Council to undertake a programme of research and knowledge exchange on the impact of constitutional change on the powers and policy levers available to the Welsh Government.
This new research takes place against the backdrop of significant constitutional change across the UK including plans to amend the devolution settlements for Scotland and Wales, the devolution of budgets and powers from Whitehall to combined authorities in England, and the proposed reorganisation of Welsh local government.
We will be examining the implications of these changes for Wales and for the Welsh Government and considering what can be learnt from other jurisdictions. The research will focus in particular on:
- Comparative analysis of how the devolution of new powers has been managed in other settings and in policy areas where the Welsh Government is most likely to acquire new powers; and
- Examining approaches to cross-border delivery of services such as health, education, environment and transport. The research will analyse international experiences of cross-border issues and the implications for inter-governmental relations.
